About this collection

Senator Helms was one of many people working hard to get an NFL Franchise in the Carolinas and he was proud and excited when it was announced that the Caroalina Panthers were calling Charlotte home. In a Senate floor statement following the announcement, Helms said, "I believe it is appropriate to say that Carolinians, both North and South, are grateful...the NFL couldn't have chosen a better place, and I'm certainly pleased and grateful that the Carolina's were selected."

In our collection we have several letters from Panthers owner, Jerry Richardson. A North Carolina native, Mr. Richardson corresponded with Senator Helms leading up to the franchise announcement and several years after. There is even an invitation to a "founding partners" party and a signed Panthers helmet thanking Senator Helms for all his hard work in helping get the franchise started.
